Michael Chandler`s anticipated bout against Conor McGregor in 2026 might face unexpected competition. Charles Oliveira, fresh off his return to the octagon, has explicitly set his sights on this high-profile matchup.

Oliveira`s Comeback and Lofty Ambitions

“Do Bronx” is preparing for UFC Rio this Saturday, marking his first fight since a brutal knockout loss to Ilia Topuria at UFC 317 in June. While acknowledging that a direct path back to the lightweight title might now be a steeper climb, Oliveira sees other significant opportunities within the UFC, particularly one at a prestigious venue.

Since President Donald Trump unveiled plans for a UFC event at the White House, numerous fighters have expressed interest in participating. Oliveira recently joined this growing list, specifically declaring his desire to face the fighter widely expected to headline the event: Conor McGregor.

The Race for McGregor`s Return Fight

Conor McGregor hasn`t competed since July 2021. After recovering from a broken leg, his scheduled fight against Michael Chandler was canceled due to a toe injury. Michael “Iron” Chandler has faced considerable ridicule for his persistent belief that this fight will still come to fruition. Following McGregor`s pledge to fight at the UFC White House event, Chandler renewed his campaign for the bout. However, Chandler now faces a formidable rival for this coveted slotโ€”a fighter who has defeated him twice.

Oliveira`s Vision for 2026

As he previewed his upcoming fight against Mateusz Gamrot at UFC Rio on October 11, Oliveira briefly discussed his aspirations for 2026. Despite Chandler`s long-standing claim to be McGregor`s return opponent, Oliveira believes he is the ideal candidate to challenge the UFC`s first two-division champion instead.

“When we talk about legacy, I think this will be something huge,” Oliveira stated when asked about the prospect of fighting at the White House. “Why not have a big fight there? So if the UFC needs me, I`m ready.” He continued, emphasizing his target, “Everyone knows which fight it would be: Charles Oliveira vs Conor McGregor. That would be the fight. The money fight.”

McGregor`s Eligibility for the White House Event

McGregor`s eligibility for the much-anticipated White House card in 2026 will not be affected by his recent anti-doping suspension. He received an 18-month suspension from Combat Sports Anti-Doping (CSAD) due to three whereabouts violations in 2024. The suspension is retroactive to September 20, 2024, the date of his third violation, making him eligible to compete from March 20, 2026.

Given that the UFC White House event is reportedly scheduled for June 14 (President Trump`s birthday), McGregor remains a prime contender to headline the card next summer, setting the stage for a potential showdown with an eager Charles Oliveira.
