Israel Adesanya is expressing a strong desire to compete again, following a challenging period of over two years without a victory inside the Octagon. His second reign as middleweight champion began triumphantly with a knockout against Alex Pereira, but was dramatically cut short by a shocking defeat to Sean Strickland at UFC 293.

Since that upset, “The Last Stylebender” has faced further setbacks, losing by submission to Dricus du Plessis in a Perth title fight and suffering a knockout against Nassourdine Imavov in Saudi Arabia this past February. These recent defeats led many to suggest retirement for the Nigerian-New Zealander, but Adesanya swiftly committed to another fight, initially targeting a rematch for redemption.

Adesanya Shifts Focus After Strickland Snub

Sean Strickland`s triumph over Adesanya in Sydney is widely regarded as one of the most significant upsets in UFC history, and Adesanya had made it clear he intended to avenge it. Earlier this year, he publicly challenged Strickland to a rematch, stating it was the only fight that genuinely interested him.

However, Strickland ignored the callout, and his UFC return was subsequently delayed due to a suspension. With the rematch seemingly off the table, Adesanya has decided to broaden his horizons, confirming he has “moved on” from his former rival and is now willing to face any opponent.

Speaking to Submission Radio, Adesanya reflected on Strickland`s lack of response: “Iโ€™m not surprised. If you want to get something done right, do it right the first time. Thatโ€™s the lesson I learned.” He further elaborated, “Heโ€™s doing other things in his own life. Heโ€™s made the money he wanted to make. I donโ€™t want to be waiting around. Iโ€™ve moved on. I just want to fightโ€ฆ Iโ€™m staying ready for any and everyone.”

Adesanya Weighs in on Chimaev vs. Imavov

Despite no longer being directly in the middleweight title picture, Adesanya continues to closely follow the developments at the top of his longtime division. He recently observed Nassourdine Imavov secure another victory against Caio Borralho at UFC Paris, a win that seemingly positions Imavov for a potential shot at Khamzat Chimaev.

Adesanya believes that the French contender could pose a serious challenge to Chimaev if they were to fight next. “Iโ€™m not gonna count out Imavov now, because of his takedown defense,” Adesanya stated on his YouTube channel. “If he can take away the wrestling from Khamzat, heโ€™ll give him problems. Thatโ€™s all you have to do. Khamzat can strike, but I see what I see. His wrestling is his main weapon, and he commits a lot to the wrestling… If Nassourdine can get past that, heโ€™ll give Khamzat problems.”

He concluded, “Right now, Khamzat is on point, and heโ€™s got the momentum behind him. So has Imavov. Who will win? Weโ€™ll see.”
