UFC icon Jon Jones has officially announced his retirement from the sport, a decision that has led to Britain`s Tom Aspinall being confirmed as the new undisputed heavyweight champion. This significant shift marks the end of an era for one of MMA`s most dominant, yet controversial, figures.

Jones, aged 37, leaves a formidable legacy, having held championship belts in both the light-heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. His final professional appearance was in November, where he secured a victory over Stipe Miocic, further cementing his status as one of the greatest fighters of all time.

His career reached an early peak in 2011 when, at just 23 years old, he became the youngest UFC champion by defeating Mauricio Rua. However, Jones`s remarkable achievements in the Octagon were frequently overshadowed by a series of scandals. These included multiple positive tests for performance-enhancing drugs and other prohibited substances, alongside several brushes with U.S. law enforcement.

“Today marks my official retirement from the UFC. This choice was made after considerable thought, and I wish to convey my profound thanks for the incredible journey I`ve had throughout these years,” Jones stated in his announcement.

“From my very first step into the Octagon, my ambition was to redefine the limits of this sport. Becoming the youngest UFC champion, successfully defending my title against elite competitors, and sharing memorable moments with fans globally โ€“ these experiences will forever be treasured.”

“I`ve navigated through immense triumphs and significant adversities, yet each obstacle provided invaluable lessons and strengthened me, both as an athlete and as an individual.”

With Jones`s departure, the path is cleared for the 32-year-old British phenom, Tom Aspinall. Previously holding the interim heavyweight title, Aspinall has now been elevated to the full championship. This promotion comes on the back of three impressive consecutive victories against tough opponents: Marcin Tybura, Sergei Pavlovich, and Curtis Blaydes, signaling a new era for the UFC`s heavyweight division.
