UFC legend Jose Aldo officially announced his second retirement from mixed martial arts in an incredibly moving ceremony before his adoring home crowd.

Affectionately known as the `King of Rio,` it was fitting that the revered former featherweight champion chose Saturday night`s UFC Rio event to symbolically hang up his gloves. Before a capacity crowd at the Farmasi Arena, Aldo was granted the opportunity for a proper farewell, particularly after his somewhat contentious recent return to the octagon.

Widely regarded as one of the sport`s greatest featherweights, Aldo faced a challenging period in his final bouts. His recent performances included a decision loss to Mario Bautista at UFC 307 last year, and a subsequent defeat to Aiemann Zahabi at UFC 315 in May, after issues with making the bantamweight limit forced a change to a featherweight contest.

An Emotional Farewell as Jose Aldo Lays Down His Gloves

Shortly after the UFC Rio main card commenced, Jose Aldo entered the octagon, carrying a pair of gloves and accompanied by his family. Visibly holding back tears, he was met with a thunderous ovation from the crowd as he ceremonially placed his gloves onto the mat, signifying the end of his illustrious career.

Aldo had previously announced his retirement in September 2022, a hiatus that lasted less than a year. He returned to competition in May 2024, following a period of exhibition and professional boxing matches.

His comeback was marked by a notable victory against Jonathan Martinez at UFC 301 in Brazil. However, this final chapter of his career did not lead him back to contention for the bantamweight title, which would have been his third championship belt in the promotion, adding to his two previous reigns as featherweight king.

Jose Aldo Cites Physical Toll as Reason for Final Retirement

Originally scheduled for a bantamweight bout against Zahabi at UFC 315 in Canada in May, Aldo revealed that he ceased his weight cut during fight week. Following an unusual `adrenaline dump` during the rearranged featherweight contest, he definitively stated that his body was no longer capable of competing at that level.

Reflecting on that period, Aldo had written: “That might have been my last time in the octagon. During this week I lived one of the biggest battles of my life, and it was not against an opponent, but within me. The past few years I have re-fueled the dream of being a champion. Trained like always, delivered like never before.”

He continued: “But as I was cutting weight, something inside me said, โ€˜You donโ€™t need it anymore.โ€™ And I listened. Itโ€™s time to move on. To live for my wife, for my children. To celebrate the story I wrote with every war, every belt conquered with blood, sweat and faith.”

Expressing his gratitude, he added: “Thank you Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta. Thank you, UFC. And most of all: thank you my fans. You guys were fuel on every walk to the octagon. You made me king.”

Aldo concluded with a poignant message: “If this was my farewell, know that Iโ€™m leaving in peace. Heart full of gratitude and head held high. Because I have made history. Because I lived my dream. Because most of all, Iโ€™ve been true to myself.”
