A three-time Olympic wrestler made a powerful statement in his swift UFC debut, showcasing formidable striking ability.

While many athletes have competed in both the Olympics and the UFC Octagon, only a select few, like Henry Cejudo, Ronda Rousey, and more recently Kayla Harrison, have achieved the rare distinction of holding both Olympic medals and UFC gold.

Among those who aimed for, but ultimately fell short of, a UFC championship was Mark Madsen. A Danish combat sports pioneer, Madsen earned a silver medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Instead of pursuing a fourth Olympic appearance in 2020, Madsen transitioned to mixed martial arts in 2018. Nicknamed `The Olympian,` he signed with the UFC, and his highly anticipated debut on home turf in Copenhagen was nothing short of spectacular.

On September 28, 2019, at the UFC`s Copenhagen event, Madsen was the undeniable fan favorite in the co-main event, held at the Royal Arena. He was Denmark`s first Olympic medal-winning wrestler to compete in the premier MMA promotion since 1948.

Madsen needed just 72 seconds to claim victory. He immediately demonstrated his elite wrestling by taking Danilo Belluardo to the mat. From there, the seasoned athlete unleashed a barrage of fists, overwhelming his Italian opponent for a swift TKO stoppage.

This dominant performance was remarkable for a newcomer with limited MMA experience. Madsen continued his impressive run, securing victories over notable fighters such as veteran Clay Guida and Vinc Pichel.

Mark Madsen`s Challenge to Paddy Pimblett Before His 2024 Retirement

After his devastating win against Belluardo, Madsen extended his perfect professional record to 12-0, winning his next three fights. During this period, he publicly challenged one of the UFC`s brightest prospects, Paddy Pimblett, who was also undefeated in the Octagon.

Madsen confidently stated to Vegas Insider:

โ€œI do believe I will beat Paddy โ€˜The Baddyโ€™ any day of the week. I will out-wrestle him, I will out-grapple him, and the way heโ€™s keeping his chin high, thereโ€™s a good chance of knocking him out as well.โ€

โ€œI like Paddyโ€ฆbut at the same time, I do believe that I am able to beat him any day of the week. That being said, Paddy is 3-0 now in the UFC and Iโ€™m 4-0, so I think it would be a great matchup, having Paddy โ€˜The Baddyโ€™ tested against a real Olympian. Letโ€™s see what heโ€™s got.โ€

However, this highly anticipated bout never materialized. Madsen retired from MMA in 2024, while Pimblett has maintained his undefeated streak in the UFC and is now setting his sights on Ilia Topuriaโ€™s lightweight title.
