The long-awaited return of UFC icon Wanderlei Silva to combat sports after a seven-year hiatus proved to be an unmitigated disaster.
At 48 years old, Silva had been away from competitive fighting since his knockout loss to Quinton โRampageโ Jackson at Bellator 206 in September 2018.
His comeback bout was an exhibition match at Spaten Fight Night 2, pitting him against Acelino Freitas, a former two-time world boxing champion with a professional record of 41-2.
Despite holding a significant 44-pound weight advantage over Freitas, `The Axe Murderer` found this disparity offered no discernible benefit during their Saturday night showdown.

A Disastrous Return to the Ring
During the initial two rounds, Silva found himself thoroughly outclassed by the significantly more seasoned boxer, Freitas.
Facing a losing battle, the MMA legend resorted to unconventional and illegal tactics against Acelino Freitas.
Silva incurred a two-point deduction for a series of blatant headbutts, ultimately leading to his disqualification from the bout.
The referee, having witnessed sufficient infractions, officially stopped the fight at 1:34 in the fourth round.
Immediately following the fight`s conclusion, pandemonium erupted in the ring as members from both fighters` entourages engaged in a violent exchange of blows.
Amidst the chaos, Silva was struck by a powerful hook from an unidentified individual, rendering him unconscious on the canvas.
The Unfulfilled Rematch Against Vitor Belfort
Initially, Vitor Belfort was slated to be Wanderlei Silva`s opponent for Spaten Fight Night 2, setting the stage for a highly anticipated rematch.
Their first encounter in 1998 at UFC Brazil saw Belfort decisively knock out Silva in a mere 44 seconds.
However, `The Axe Murderer` was denied his opportunity for vengeance when Belfort unexpectedly pulled out of the scheduled rematch.
Belfort, known as `The Phenom,` cited two concussions sustained during training as the reason for his withdrawal, a claim his long-time rival Silva views with skepticism.
At a press conference the previous Sunday, Silva criticized Belfort, stating, “He needs to act on what he constantly preaches. He speaks endlessly about strength, perseverance, and optimism, only to then do this.”
Silva continued, “This incident highlights the crucial role of mental fortitude for an athlete. A fighter must possess confidence, believe in their capabilities, and understand their potential. They should stand before a mirror and declare, `I`m a lion! I`m a lion!`”
He added, “Whatever it takes, right? Hire a psychologist, get therapy. But this fight is set for next year. As I stated, I committed to being here on the 27th, and I was. I`ll be there next time too, and I sincerely hope he doesn`t back out again.”
